William J. Webb
Prominent Whitehall Lumberman Dies at 93
WHITEHALL (Special) — W. J. Webb, 93-year-old Whitehall lumberman and banker, died at the Community Hospital at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday following an illness of about four months. He entered the hospital Mar. 30 after he fell in his home and suffered a bruise of his left hip. On May 21 he fell in the hospital and received a fracture of the right hip.
Mr. Webb was born July 7, 1859, at Black Earth, Wis. In 1874 the family came to Whitehall, and Mr. Webb was engaged in farming, lumbering and in the dray business here until 1881 when he went to Telluride, Colo., in search of gold. He stayed in the mining area until 1886, when he was forced to give up the work because his hearing had been damaged, an affliction which finally caused total deafness.
After his return east he went into the hardware business at Heggen, Pierce County, and at Painesville, Minn. In 1890 he purchased the Whitehall lumberyard and remained in that business until 1929, when he partially retired. He served on the board of directors of the John O. Melby & Co. Bank for some years and in 1939 was elected president, a position which he held until the date of the annual meeting this year. He was associated with the bank since its founding, 64 years ago.
Mr. Webb married Ella Knudtson at Whitehall in 1886. Surviving are his son, Archie, Whitehall, and two sisters, Mrs. Nettle Tubbs, of Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. H. G. Becker of Long Beach, Calif.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Fletcher Bennett at the Whitehall Methodist Church at 2 p. m. Saturday. Burial will be In Lincoln Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Johnson Funeral Home Friday afternoon and evening.
