E. Kaas Dies at Hospital
WHITEHALL (Special) — Mayor Clarence Kaas, 73, died at the Whitehall Community Hospital here at 7:20 a m. Friday. He had been ill with heart trouble for about a month.
A Pigeon Falls community leader for many years, Mr. Haas helped organize the Pigeon Falls Cooperative Creamery in 1918, was elected to the first board of directors, and served as secretary-treasurer for 41 years up to January of this year when he resigned.
From 1934 to 1942 he was chairman of the Town of Pigeon when he declined to run again. He also served at the same time on the Trempealeau County Board and was board chairman for two terms.
He had indicated this spring that he would not be a candidate for reelection as mayor. Council President Lester Brennom has been acting mayor during Mr. Kaas' illness.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. E. B. Christopherson at the Pigeon Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church. The time and date are to be arranged by the Hagen Funeral Home at Pigeon Falls. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Kaas was born in the Town of Pigeon in 1885 and married Mathilda Larson Nov. 9, 1907. He lived on the farm until about 10 years ago when they moved here.
He is survived by a son, Leonard, Whitehall; two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Isaacson, Town of Northfield, Mrs. Karl Anderson, Town of Pigeon; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother Orlando, Black River Falls.
