N. L. Fredrickson, Whitehall Resident 70 Years, Dead
Whitehall, Wis. — (Special) — Whitehall’s oldest resident, N. L. Fredrickson, Sr., 90. died at 4 a. m. today at the Whitehall Community hospital after an illness of several weeks.
Mr. Fredrickson, a native of Oslo, Norway, had been a resident of Trempealeau county 80 years and of this city 70 years.
He underwent an operation at the Colonial hospital at Rochester three weeks ago and was brought to the hospital here as soon as he could be moved.
The daughter of Fred and Isabella Larson Fredrickson, he came to America at the age of ten with his mother and stepfather, George Reitzel. The family settled in Ettrick where they resided a year before moving to a farm in the town of Preston.
Owns Hardware Store
In 1875 the family moved to Whitehall where Mr. Fredrickson rejoined them in 1877 after logging and working on farms in the area. Mrs. Reitzel operated the first hotel in Whitehall.
Mr. Fredrickson worked at the C. M. Paine & Company lumberyards after coming here. At that time they were operated by T. H. Earle, first resident of Whitehall.
Mr. Fredrickson also operated a tavern here until 1888, when he bought the hardware business of E. H. Warner , first Whitehall hardware dealer. In 1894 he sold the business to Blodgett & Overby. In 1900 he bought the farm on the south edge of Whitehall.
He married the former Mary Allen in 1896 and she died in 1902. There were no children. In 1910 he married Sigrld Kildahl and they had four children. She died in September, 1943.
He was elected Trempealeau county sheriff in 1892 and served the one term then allotted sheriffs by state law. In 1895 and 1896 he was undersheriff. Later he was county treasurer four years.
Village President
He was president of the village in 1893 and in 1900. Always active in civic affairs, he was on the board of trustees of the hospital at the time of his death. He had also served on the county board of supervisors and was secretary-manager of the Whitehall Cooperative creamery and an active member of the Lutheran Brotherhood of Our Saviour’s Lutheran church. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows over 60 years.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but services will be held at Our Saviour’s Lutheran church here with the Rev. O. G. Birkeland officiating and burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery.
Survivors are four children, three grandchildren, and a half-brother, George Reitzel, town of Preston.
The children are Mrs. Sidney (Esadora) Gilbertson, Lewis, and Mrs. Douglas (Eunice) Mason, Whitehall, and Mrs. Earle (Louise) Berg, Terre Haute, Ind.
