WHITEHALL, Wis. (Special) — Ludwig “Barney” Hammerstad, 86, Whitehall, a former mayor and city treasurer, died at 5:40 p.m. Thursday at Whitehall Community Hospital, where he had been admitted Sunday after a heart attack.
Born Jan. 16, 1874, in Norway, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lars Hammerstad. At the age of 7, he came to this country with his parents, two brothers and a sister to live in the Town of Hale north of here with another brother. As a boy, he attended Whitehall's first school.
After working on farms until 1898, he came to Whitehall to work as a shoemaker with his brother, Nels. He expanded the shoe trade into a men's furnishings store, then sold the building and retired in 1934.
He married the former Marie Henderson in October 1899 in the Town of Ettrick. She died in 1910.
Mr. Hammerstad was mayor of Whitehall 12 years, first from 1914 to 1918, and later for a period of eight years. He also served as city treasurer.
Survivors are: Three daughters, Mrs. Olive Bitter, Whitehall, now visiting in Norway; Mrs. Rollin (Luella) Holtan, and Mrs. E. L. (Gladys) Gilbertson, Whitehall; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Three brothers and a sister are dead.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, the Rev. O. G. Birkeland officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery.
Friends may call at Johnson Funeral Home Sunday afternoon and evening.
