Alfred J. Lamberson
Dr. Lamberson, Whitehall Vet, Dies at 91
WHITEHALL, Wis. (Special) – Dr. Alfred J. Lamberson, practicing veterinarian for 70 years, died at 9 a m. today at the Whitehall Community Hospital, where he had been a patient a short time.
He was born May 2, 1870, in a little cabin on the farm a mile west of Whitehall which his father, John C. Lamberson, had homesteaded.
At the age of 18 he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin agricultural college. During his two years there he became interested in veterinary surgery and because his veterinary teacher had graduated from a school at Ontario, Can., he went there. At that time there were only three other veterinary schools in North America: Montreal, New York and one starting in Chicago
He enrolled in 1899 and was graduated in 1901. His first position was with the Minnesota State Board of Health and he was assigned to work with a doctor m the Winona area on contagious diseases. He remained with the department two years and then established a private practice in Winona, which he continued 10 years.
At the dedication of Winona’s old wagon bridge, across the Mississippi River, which was replaced in 1943 with the present bridge, he served as a special policeman for Winona and is believed to. have been the first man on horseback to cross the new structure.
On Feb. 6, 1893, he married Lauretta Birdie Johnson of Coral City near Whitehall. They lived in Winona until 1903, when Dr. Lamberson purchased his lather’s farm near Whitehall. This he operated, continuing his veterinary practice at the same time, until 1917, when he turned it over to his son, Raymond A. Lamberson. They then purchased a home in Whitehall where they lived until her death in 1949. Since that time Dr. Lamberson lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore R. Duebbert.
Survivors are: One daughter, Mrs. Theodort R. (Winnifred) Duebbert, and one son, Raymond A., both of rural Whitehall; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother. Lloyd Lamberson, South Bend, Ind. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Whitehall Methodist Church, the Rev. Lyndon Viel officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery.
