WHITEHALL. Wis. (Special) j — A service for John E. (Jack) Rhode, 73, Whitehall, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. The Rev. O.G. Birkeland will officiate.
Friends may call at Johnson Funeral Home this afternoon and evening and at the church after 10 a m. Tuesday.
Mr. Rhode, sportsman, died at his Whitehall home Saturday. He was born May 27, 1888, at Watertown, Wis., two weeks after his parents, August and Augusta Rhode, came to America from Germany.
Mr. Rhode’s straw hat was Whitehall’s first sign of spring for 30 years. He was a member of the citizen’s committee to revive the Boy Scout movement in Whitehall, a member of the Rod and Gun Club and active in stocking streams for better fishing. He once directed the safety division of Trempealeau County and had been on the Lincoln Cemetery board since 1921.
Mr. Rhode came to Whitehall in 1910 when hired as a pitcher for the Whitehall baseball clubs for which he later played third base. He was a member of the Oldtimers Baseball Association and director at the time of his death. Mr.Rhode coached Whitehall’s Little League teams. He was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, where at one time was a member of its senior choir.
He married Murel Ingalls in 1912 and last January they celebrated their 50th anniversary. As licensed morticians they operated a funeral home here from 1921 to 1947.
Surviving are: His wife; two brothers, two sisters and several nieces and nephews.
