Whitehall Pioneer Is Dead at 91
WHITEHALL, Wis. (Special) — Edmund C. Getts, 91, pioneer Whitehall merchant, died Thursday at a Whitehall hospital after an illness of four months.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Johnson Funeral Home. O. D. Witherbee, Galesville, will conduct the Masonic rites. Burial will be in the Lincoln Cemetery.
Mr. Getts was born Feb 9, 1867 in La Crosse, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Getts. Henry Getts was Whitehall's first merchant, opening a store in 1874.
Mr. Getts worked in his father's store as a youth, then started the first cheese factory at Whitehall. In 1888, with the late Chris Everson, he started the first creamery.
Later Mr. Getts and his father operated gram and hay ware houses at Whitehall, Blair, Osseo, Eleva, Strum and Mondovi. In 1893 he started an egg and poultry business in Whitehall which he operated until 1950. His business career in Whitehall spanned 63 years.
Mr. Getts was president of the Village of Whitehall twice before it became a city. He also served as village clerk. He was a 32nd degree Mason since 1926 and received his 50-year pin in 1951 from the Whitehall lodge.
He was married to Pearl Sherwood April 14, 1892. Mrs. Getts died as a young woman, and Mr. Getts was married to Eugene Slater of Chicago Jan. 20. 1916. She was killed in an automobile accident Nov. 25. 1922.
Mr. Getts is survived by two sons, Clark H., New York City, and Alan H., Whitehall; one daughter, Mrs. Frank T. (Kathryn) Hayden, Linwood. Utah; two grandchildren; and one brother, Ernest Getts, Los Angeles, Calif.
