WHITEHALL. Wis. — Services for Herman D. Briggs, 88, Whitehall, founder of Briggs Transportation Co., will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Whitehall. The Rev. Richard Kelling will officiate and burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery in Whitehall.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday and until noon on Saturday at the Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall and in the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the service.
Briggs died Tuesday, May 22, 1979, in Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home, Whitehall.
He was born in La Crosse County, June 7, 1890, to Charles E and Katherine Briggs. He married Mary Olson Jan 31, 1910. She died in December of 1978. Briggs organized his trucking line in 1934. The firm’s headquarters moved as the firm grew from Whitehall to Eau Claire to St. Paul. The line now operates out of 35 terminals in 13 Middle West states from Colorado to Ohio.
In 1917, Briggs acquired his first team of horses, went into business for himself, and hauled goods for the creamery. In 1919 he purchased his first Model T truck; in 1934, his first tractor and trailer.
Although he gradually added more trucks to the expanding firm, he retained an interest in the family’s race horses and he accompanied them to fairs and race tracks.
Briggs also had other commercial interests in Whitehall. In 1955, he retired after 18 years as branch salesman for Socony-Mobil Oil Co. He was a former member of the Trempealeau County Board and the Whitehall City Council, and a 50-year member of the Oddfellows Lodge.
Survivors are one son, George of Marco, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Alyce Mattson of Whitehall and Mrs. Donald (Kathryn) Johnson of Chippewa Falls; three brothers, Willis, Clarence and Wilbur, all of Whitehall; two sisters. Mrs. Iver A. (Emma) Berg of Blair and Mrs. Lulu Hilleque of Westby; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, two sisters and one son.
