Prominent Whitehall Business Man Passed Away Friday Night
WHITEHALL, Wis.— (Special.) —Funeral services for Gilbert S. Rice, prominent Whitehall business man, were held at Our Savior’s Lutheran church Monday afternoon with the Rev. O. G. Birkeland officiating and burial was made in the Lincoln cemetery. He passed away Friday evening.
Mr. Rice was 61 years of age January 11. Last February he suffered an attack of the flu which led to complications from which he never recovered. Mr. Rice was born January 11, 1872, on Trempealeau Prairie. His father, Tracy E. Rice, came to Trempealeau county from New York and married Ellen G. Hanson.
Gilbert Rice spent his boyhood on the farm in Irvin Coulee, attended the Whitehall schools and later took a course in the La Crosse Business college. He spent a short time in Cando, N. D.
May 30, 1895, he was married to Ida O. Wold, daughter of Ole and Kari Wold. They had seven children, Tracy O., Kathryn I., Marjorie Thelma, Mrs. Ben Skogstad, Evelyn M., Mrs. J. O. Gilbertson, Donald L., and Marion E.
Mr. Rice held many offices of public trust in Whitehall, having served as mayor and trustee several times. He was a member of the hospital board of trustees since it was organized.
Beside his wife and family he is survived by three grandchildren, one uncle, Specher Rice of Trempealeau; four sisters, Millie and Clara Everson of Whitehall, Mrs. H. L. Petrie, Linton, N. D., and Florence Everson, Virginia, Minn., and one brother, Edward J., residing on the home farm.
