Alton E. “Tony” Berg, 84, of Whitehall, died on Friday, July 11, 2003 in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
Tony was born on April 9, 1919 in Blair to Iver and Emma (Briggs) Berg. He married Charlotte Lambach on December 15, 1940 in Decorah, Iowa. Tony served in the United States Army from 1945, when he was wounded in Luzon, Phillipines, until 1946.
Tony was employed with Briggs Transfer and owned and operated the Mobile Oil Gas Station in Whitehall. Tony served as the Whitehall City Clerk and Treasurer for 23 years prior to his retirement.
Tony was a member of the Moen-Hamilton VFW Post No. 8288.
Tony is survived by his wife, Charlotte; a daughter, Rebecca Taylor of Whitehall; two sons, Frederick (Pat) Berg of Janesville and Steven (Cyndi) Berg of Spring, Texas; three grandchildren, Lauri (Mike) Knapton, Aaron and Ashley Berg; a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Knapton; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by two brothers, Landis and Ronald Berg; and a grandson, Mark Alton Berg.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home with burial in the Lincoln Cemetery, both in Whitehall. Pastor Gloria Friedrich will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Hutchins-Stendahl American Legion Post #191.
Visitation will be Monday, July 14, 2003 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall and also one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.
